Endurance/Thermal

Endurance Test

Standards used/referenced:

AS/NZS 60598.1: Luminaires General Requirements and Tests

Test details:

The Endurance test takes place in a thermally controlled enclosure and will drive the luminaire above its rated voltage and temperature for an extended period of time to establish how it performs under stress. The luminaire is operated for ten consecutive cycles of 21 hours ON followed by 3 hours OFF.

The luminaire is then examined for any signs of damage such as scorching, deformation or melting during the test. Thermal protection devices in the luminaire or power supply must not switch off power to the luminaire at any time during the test.

Report inclusions:

The test report will include: The manufacturer’s information and specifications, photos of the luminaire and thermocouple location, electrical and thermal test parameters, and endurance test results.

Thermal Test

Standards used/referenced:

AS/NZS 60598.1: Luminaires General Requirements and Tests

Test details:

The Thermal test takes place in a draught-proof thermally controlled enclosure and will drive the luminaire at 106% of its rated voltage and at its rated ambient temperature.

Once the luminaire has thermally stabilised, temperature readings are recorded at various locations. Compliance is achieved if none of the measured temperatures exceed the values given in Tables 12.1 and 12.2 of AS/NZS 60598.1.

Report inclusions:

The test report will include: The manufacturer’s information and specifications, photos of the luminaire and thermocouple location, electrical and thermal test parameters, and thermal test results.

Recessed Luminaire Classification Test

Standards used/referenced:

AS/NZS 60598.2.2: Luminaires Particular Requirements – Recessed Luminaires.
AS/NZS 60598.2.2:2001: Luminaires Particular Requirements – Recessed Luminaires. (NZ only)

Test details:

Recessed luminaires are tested to determine their suitability for use with ceiling insulation, depending on their operating temperatures.
Luminaires are mounted in a draught-proof test box within a thermally controlled room. The test box simulates a ceiling cavity which contains thermal insulation and building elements. Temperatures are recorded at various points on the luminaire, the control gear and the test box.

The classifications that may be obtained after testing are:
• Non-IC Luminaire
• Do-Not-Cover Luminaire
• CA90 Luminaire
• CA135 Luminaire (NZ only)
• IC Luminaire
• IC-4 Luminaire
• IC-F Luminaire (NZ only)

Report inclusions:

The test report will include: The manufacturer’s information and specifications, photos of the luminaire, electrical and thermal test parameters, thermal and ingress test results, and recessed luminaire classification.
